Ch Irton First Footer
(DoB 1/1/1993)
(Ch Ashbrae McNally ex Opinan Baubo by Irton)
Our bitches have always been good at choosing inopportune moments for coming into season and whelping etc and none more expert than Kiki, so it was no surprise that due to whelp around the New Year she should pick the few hours straddling the New Year itself to produce her final litter. Although she started in the early evening progress was slow and by 11: 30, despite much effort, only one live pup had resulted and we were getting concerned. Our vet was on his way out to a calving and decided to call in the way to check – by the time he arrived, just after Midnight, a tiny bitch puppy had arrived and after an injection the last of the litter was born. Naming was easy -  Reveller for the first born; Hogmanay for the bitch born just before the hour and First Footer for the dark (well red!) stranger who was our first arrival for the New Year. This proved to be an exceptional litter producing two champions and a dual CC winner – 14 CC's in all.
Dinny – alias Champion Irton First Footer – was retained at Irton whilst his two litter mates (Ch Irton Hogmanay at Ashbrae and Irton Reveller at Ashbrae) went to the Cuthbertson's Ashbrae kennel where both of them have successfully bred on. He proved to be an exceptional Border, handsome, showy, very laid back and well behaved – his only vice being a passion for food!
After a successful puppy career he won his first reserve CC at National Terrier and followed this with the CC at Birmingham National, both from the junior class. He gained his title at the Scottish Club later that year at just 20 months old.
At Crufts we had no choice but to enter him in open – although barely 2 years old – and were more than delighted when he won the CC under Joyce Fagan (Elandmead); he followed this the next week by taking the CC at the Border Terrier Club's 75th anniversary show under Elaine Cuthbertson and rounded up the fortnight by gaining his sixth at National Terrier under Tom Johnstone – an eventful two weeks. He won 9CC's and 4 reserves before being retired the following year.
Mated to his kennel mate, Champion Raeburnfoot Isla at Irton, he produced in two litters Champion Irton Blaeberry; Irton Heskeir (1CC & 5 reserve CC's; dam of Ch Irton Maree and the CC winner I The Darkening); Irton Brandy Butter (reserve CC); Irton Berneray Baywillow (reserve CC and dam of Ch Baywillow Sun Spice) and Dk Ch Irton Cognac (Sire of Int Ch Xena of Limit Stone amongst others).
Like all of the Irtons, Dinnie is a great sportsman and loves walking on the high Fells, now 13 years old he is still quite active – if a little portly – and bossman here at home.
